Testimonies about What Makes my Piano Lessons Exceptional

José Lencart

Working with the teacher helped me see new ways to approach the piano. Her serious but friendly manner made everything easier and helped me progress a lot in a short time.

Daniela Fernandes

Professor Jill Lawson’s classes led me to discover musical and pianistic abilities that I didn’t know I had. As her student, I not only became a better pianist but also a better teacher. She is an excellent example of the harmony between kindness and high standards, which makes her a very well-rounded teacher and person. For me, it was (and always will be) a source of pride and good fortune to have her as my teacher.

Nádia Roseiro

Taking lessons with Professor Jill Lawson was a transformative experience both for my development as a pianist and for my evolution as a piano teacher. The maturity I gained during the time I spent under her guidance, combined with her deeply attentive and focused approach, was decisive for my growth.
Her detailed look at technical aspects that, at first glance, seemed simple or basic, made all the difference in how I came to understand music, pianism, and, above all, in how I now pass on that knowledge to my own students.
She not only helped me overcome the challenges I faced, but also found unique ways to highlight my qualities as a pianist.
This experience had a profound impact on me and shaped the way I teach. Attention to detail, respect for each student’s process, encouragement of self-confidence, and the ability to inspire—all of these characteristics have become fundamental pillars of my teaching method.
Jill Lawson is undoubtedly one of the most influential figures in my musical journey. I am deeply grateful for the privilege of having learned from such an extraordinary teacher and pianist, whose influence echoes daily in my work as a piano teacher.

Rafael Pina

Jill Lawson is the perfect combination of a caring and pragmatic teacher and a sensitive and intelligent artist. From solving technical problems to contagious musical inspiration, as a student I was fortunate to benefit from her enormous dedication.

Inês Leite

Professor Jill Lawson was a fundamental presence during the three years of my piano degree. Under her guidance, not only did I evolve technically in ways I never imagined, but I also grew as a performer. She saw potential in me that I didn’t always recognize, and with patience and dedication, she helped me explore it to the fullest.
After my time with Professor Lawson, I know that I can guide my own study at home better than ever before: in addition to learning what to do in each piece, I learned how to do it, through various study methods, techniques, and processes that I will always use.
One of the qualities I most appreciated in Professor Jill during my journey was the fact that her passion for her profession was evident in every class. There is a big difference between a teacher who “has” to teach and one who genuinely wants and enjoys teaching and seeing their students flourish — and for that willpower and pursuit of improvement, I am eternally grateful!

Afonso Salazar

The time I spent with Professor Jill was the most valuable I ever had; not a single second was wasted. I wish everyone had the opportunity to have a Jill Lawson in their life.

António Silva

Jill is one of the most influential people in my life. She had a huge impact on my approach to music, my technique, and my teaching.
And she did it all in a way that only a truly excellent musician could. In the two years I was her student, I learned lessons that have stayed with me for life, and every day, over the years, I feel her impact on me growing, and the lessons I learned becoming more deeply understood the more I work.
Everything I am today as a musician, which is an integral part of my being, I owe to Jill. It is something that is priceless.
I thank her from the bottom of my heart. The more time passes, the more I see the influence she has had on me. I would never have been a good musician if it weren’t for Jill!

Rodrigo Teixeira

I studied piano with Jill Lawson between the ages of 12 and 20—a formative period not only in my musical education, but also in my personal growth. It was my transition from childhood to early adulthood. Jill was not just a teacher; she was a mentor, an inspiration, and, in many moments, a constant and encouraging presence during a phase full of discoveries and challenges.
From day one, it was clear that she didn’t just teach technique. Of course, she demanded precision, discipline, and respect for the score, but above all, she taught us to listen, interpret, and know how to feel the music. Her approach was demanding but never cold; she believed in her students’ potential and knew exactly when to challenge and when to support, especially considering each student’s differences and how each had their own personality. With her, I learned to build a solid technical foundation, but also to seek my own musical voice.
Our relationship was deeply professional, but with a personal dimension that made it special. Over the years, we shared not only musical progress, but also conversations about life, ambitions, and doubts. Jill was attentive, sensitive, and had impressive intuition—she could tell when something was affecting me, even if I didn’t say anything. At those times, music became not only a discipline, but a safe space where I could express what I couldn’t put into words.

Eight years by her side shaped not only the pianist I am, but also much of the person I have become. I have deep respect and enormous gratitude for everything she taught me. Jill Lawson is, for me, more than a teacher—she is one of the most influential figures in my education.

Carolina Alves

As a student, she gave me much more than was required of her. She was a demanding and patient teacher. She taught me how to solve technical problems while always keeping in mind a musical creativity that elevated the classes to a moment of profound sharing and learning.
With her, I learned to see my difficulties in other ways, becoming a better pianist and teacher. I have great admiration for her.

Mateus Barros

During my bachelor’s degree at the National Superior Academy of Orchestra, I had the privilege of joining Professor Jill Lawson’s class.
Throughout this journey, this experience proved to be deeply remarkable on an artistic, technical, and human level. From the very first contact, we developed a solid pedagogical relationship based on trust, mutual respect, and constant artistic stimulation. Professor Jill Lawson demonstrated not only an exceptional mastery of the repertoire and piano technique, but also a remarkable sensitivity in the way she guides and accompanies the individual development of each student.
Her attentive listening, combined with rigorous but always constructive demands, allowed me to freely explore my musical identity, while solidifying my technical and interpretive foundations.
Even in a limited amount of time, I felt a clear and consistent advance in my journey: I gained greater interpretive maturity, awareness of sound, musical depth, and artistic autonomy.
Professor Jill played a decisive role in this process, and I am enormously grateful for the teachings, support, and inspiration she provided me.
Her dedication and involvement left a mark that will continue to accompany me throughout my training and career.
